For generations, the sailors of Saint-Tropez climbed to the chapel before going to sea to pray for Saint Anne's protection. On their return, they came back to leave an ex-voto in gratitude. The chapel still holds a fine collection of these ex-votos, most of them linked to the town's maritime history.
The simple, Provençal-style building has been listed as a historic monument since 1951. It opens to the public on only a few days each year: 18 May, the last day of the Bravade of Saint-Tropez; 26 July, the feast of Saint Anne; and 15 August. On 26 July, the people of Saint-Tropez celebrate the Sainte-Anne with a dawn mass, followed by a procession around the chapel and the blessing of the land, the sky and the sea.
