Corsica, the Island of Beauty: Coastline, Mountains, the GR20 and Heritage

As soon as you turn your back on the sea and head inland, you discover a Corsica full of outdoor activities. Complex, elusive and surprising, but so seductive, Corsica moves between lively nights and the gentle rustle of the wind through the century-old trees of its superb forests. An island of contrasts, it never stops surprising.
Of all the names writers and poets have given Corsica, one stands out: the island of deep blue. Its coastline stretches for around 1,000 km, as varied as it is beautiful. To the west and south, rocky wild coves alternate with fine sandy beaches and cliffs, dotted everywhere with lighthouses and old Genoese towers. These are remnants of troubled times, when Corsicans took refuge in the mountains to escape constant attacks by invaders and pirates. To the east, the coastline is straighter. Much of it remains wild.
Between sea and mountains
Corsica is a true paradise for water sports, many of which can be enjoyed all year round: dinghy sailing, sea kayaking, deep-sea fishing, windsurfing, surfing and scuba diving.
But the magic of Corsica lies in its extraordinary diversity. Everyone can find their own corner of paradise on this resolutely mountainous island, which always has another cove, village or stretch of maquis to discover. Walks lead through lush forests, past rushing rivers and generous vineyards, on routes easy enough for adults and children alike.
For experienced hikers, there is the famous GR20, which crosses Corsica from north to south over around 180 km. Allow around fifteen days to complete it.
A priceless heritage
Corsica’s heritage, as rich as it is varied, is another of the island’s great attractions. Ajaccio, with its Napoleonic memories, its picturesque neighbourhoods and the Musée Fesch, home to an exceptional collection of Italian paintings, is a work of art in itself.
Pisa left Corsica a dazzling Romanesque heritage, seen in small churches found mainly in the Nebbio, the Castagniccia and the Balagne.
Visiting Corsica is also a journey through authentic flavours. With farmhouse inns labelled Bienvenue à la ferme, the island offers quality meals made with farm produce, served on the farm itself.
