Auron, a ski resort near the French Riviera: luxury chalets for rent, ski area and real estate guide
Auron is a mountain resort in the Alpes-Maritimes department, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. It sits above the Tinée Valley near Saint-Étienne-de-Tinée, around 95 kilometres from the Côte d'Azur, a drive of under an hour and a half. The resort sits at 1,600 metres, in the heart of the Mercantour massif and close to the Mercantour National Park, with the nearby Las Donnas summit reaching 2,474 metres.
History and character
Auron established itself in 1936 as a pioneer of downhill skiing in the Alpes-Maritimes, and the resort was formally created in 1937, on the site of a former alpine village once used as the barn of Saint-Étienne-de-Tinée. Its centre still features a stone-built chapel dedicated to St Erige, with a Romanesque bell tower and notable interior wall paintings, alongside traditional wooden chalets and barns.
The ski area
The ski area covers 135 kilometres of runs between 1,600 and 2,450 metres, a vertical drop of around 850 metres, making it the largest in the Alpes-Maritimes. It is organised into 43 marked pistes across four sectors, served by 18 lifts. Snowmaking covers 55% of the resort, and beyond winter, the surrounding terrain offers extensive summer walking, including access toward the Puy d'Auron.
Why people go there
Auron’s location is one of its greatest advantages. Around a 90-minute drive from Nice or Monaco, it is close enough to the coast for a day’s skiing, and many visitors from the Côte d’Azur come up for the day.
It is a very charming, family-friendly resort, and an ideal place for children to learn to ski. The varied terrain suits all levels, and the snow is reliable throughout the season.
In summer, Auron is a popular base for walking and the gateway to the Mercantour National Park.

The property market centres on two main types: apartments, from studios to larger units, mostly in managed residences near the village centre or ski lifts, and chalets, ranging from restored traditional builds to new-build alpine-style properties. Per-square-metre prices vary widely, from around €3,800 at the lower end to over €15,000 for the most sought-after properties, averaging roughly €8,000. Position drives value most: proximity to the lifts or village centre commands a clear premium over more peripheral locations.
The market includes both character properties restored by architects and newly built programmes offering turnkey chalets and apartments. Demand is supported by Auron's dual-season use and its accessibility from the Côte d'Azur, making it a realistic option for a second home on the coast as much as a pure ski investment.
