Surrounded by beautiful gardens and patios, the sunniest wall of the property carries the inscription ‘Quad peto lumen est’ or ‘What I ask for is light’ – a fitting tribute to the villa’s English architect,Harold Peto.

The villa was built in 1904, commissioned by British shipping owner Arthur Wilson. The Wilsons, who were personal friends of Edward VII, were well known among the English community and for their many grand receptions.A young Winston Churchill was a frequent visitor to the villa in his pursuit of the Wilson’s daughter Muriel, a relationship that was not to be.

During The First World War at Villa Maryland Cap Ferrat

During the First World War the Wilsons invited injured soldiers, from the Queen Victoria Hospital in Nice, for lunch and afternoon tea. These unusual visitors enjoyed walking around the grounds, in the relative peace and quiet.

Muriel and her husband John lived at the villa for many years and later moved into a smaller but equally elegant house, Le Clos, within the grounds. This allowed the couple to rent out the main villa and continue to enjoy the gardens.

Today the property is perfectly maintained, and privately owned, remaining one of the most original villas on Cap Ferrat.
